Victor D Hanson is a scholar who mixes groundbreaking (literally, in his studies of ancient agriculture and war) scholarship on Classical Greece with right-wing punditry: sort of a conservative version of Paul Krugman. His book The Other Greeks appears in our syllabus bibliography for the way it goes back to the archeological evidence to show that Greek democracy was the product of red-neck farmers, not urban intellectuals. This morning, his latest quip started making the rounds:
When you think about it, Obama has kept the detention camp at Guantanamo. He’s going ahead with military tribunals. And where Bush only waterboarded three terrorists, Obama has used drones to execute about 2,600. Obama’s sort of growing on me.I'd add that the Dark Lord himself--Dick Cheney--said something similar a couple of years ago. More of Hanson's writing here: Works and Days
I would not say Obama is growing on me, but it is impressive how may terrorists have been vaporized by the drones. They are not quite R2D2, but they are quite effective. Funny how the media was all over Bush43 for water boarding, and Obama gets a pass.
ReplyDeleteAs for him not closing Gitmo, we really should not be surprised, he hasn't anything else he has promised. Unless going deeper in debt is the change you wanted, not me.
Maybe Obama's plan all along to close Gitmo was to just kill all the prisoners, but that wasn't 'politically correct' enough to include in any campaign speech. I can't believe he is getting away with treating people like this, when Bush got in trouble for waterboarding just three terrorists.
